Cursive u

In cursive, the lowercase letter u takes 1 stroke and is a short letter that sits between the baseline and the midline. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text u is the number 13 most common letter, at about 2.8% of all letters, so it comes up in most paragraphs.

Two upright strokes joined at the bottom: a cup with a tail on the right.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the dashed midline at the left side. Sweep down and to the right and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending just above the baseline at the right side.

Common mistakes

Sloping the second stroke the wrong way, which gives a v.

u is most often confused with v. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How u joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves u at the baseline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

un: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the n starts at the midline
us: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the s starts at the baseline
ue: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the e starts at the baseline
um: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the m starts at the midline
ut: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the t starts at the top line
ud: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the d starts at the midline
