Cursive n

In cursive, the lowercase letter n takes 1 stroke and is a short letter that sits between the baseline and the midline. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text n is the number 6 most common letter, at about 6.7% of all letters, so it comes up in nearly every line you write.

Two humps. The second is a round arch, not a point.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start just below the dashed midline at the left side. Sweep across to the right and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending just above the baseline at the right side.

Common mistakes

Counting three humps, which makes an m.

n is most often confused with m. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How n joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves n at the baseline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

nd: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the d starts at the midline
ng: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the g starts at the midline
nc: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the c starts at the midline
ni: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the i starts at the midline
nk: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the k starts at the baseline
na: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the a starts at the midline
