Cursive g

In cursive, the lowercase letter g takes 1 stroke and is a letter with a tail that drops below the baseline. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text g is the number 17 most common letter, at about 2% of all letters, so it comes up in most paragraphs.

The oval first, then a long stem that drops below the baseline and curls back left.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the dashed midline at the right side. Sweep straight down and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending on the baseline at the right side.

Common mistakes

Stopping the tail at the baseline, which makes a q.

g is most often confused with q. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How g joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves g at the baseline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

ga: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the a starts at the midline
gi: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the i starts at the midline
gh: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the h starts at the baseline
gr: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the r starts at the baseline
ge: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the e starts at the baseline
gg: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the g starts at the midline
