Cursive e

In cursive, the lowercase letter e takes 1 stroke and is a short letter that sits between the baseline and the midline. The model on this page is US Traditional, the connected style most American classrooms teach: the pen stays on the paper inside a word, and every letter is drawn to flow into the next. Press Play to watch the letter write itself, then use Step to move one stroke at a time. In English text e is the number 1 most common letter, at about 12.7% of all letters, so it comes up in nearly every line you write.

A small loop that opens at the midline: up, loop left, and out. Keep the loop open so it does not fill with ink.

Stroke by stroke

  1. Start on the baseline at the left side. Sweep across to the right and make a loop that crosses your own line, ending just above the baseline at the right side.

Common mistakes

Filling the loop, which makes it look like an i or an l.

e is most often confused with i. Put them side by side and check the first stroke: the starting point and the height are what separate them.

How e joins to the next letter

In connected cursive the pen leaves e at the baseline. That exit point decides the connector to the letter that follows. These are the pairs you will write most often.

er: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the r starts at the baseline
ea: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the a starts at the midline
en: a rising join: the connector climbs from the baseline to the next letter's start; the n starts at the midline
ee: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the e starts at the baseline
el: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the l starts at the baseline
eb: a low join: the connector runs along the baseline; the b starts at the baseline
